The exhibition "Count the Stars" by artist Andrey Popov is a fascinating journey into a world of quiet observations and touching images. In his paintings, the artist creates warm, multi-layered stories filled with symbols and irony, where everyday objects and people get special meanings.
Andrey is one of those rare artists who has preserved a childlike ability to feel the world’s marvels, and through this perspective, he reveals familiar things and relationships in an unexpected light. His paintings are like "snapshots" capturing hidden meanings in everyday life, inviting viewers to ponder them and decode their messages.
Working in the style of "Artoon" - a unique genre on the border between painting and ironic graphics - Andrey describes his approach as "romantic cynicism." With humor and self-irony, he explores reality with its depth, and its metaphorical layers.
His style, balancing between humor and gentle melancholy, evokes smiles and warmth, encouraging viewers to look at the surrounding world with wonder and compassion. Andrey believes that humor and self-irony are the best medicine for our times.
"Perhaps beauty won’t save the world, but humor and self-irony will prevent it from perishing," he says.
"Count the Stars" is an invitation not just to look, but to truly see: to notice the small things that make our life surprising and multifaceted. The exhibition immerses viewers in a contemplative world, allowing them to forget the bustle of daily life and inspiring each person to discover their own "stars."
Andrey Popov was born in 1970 in Tashkent. He began drawing in childhood, filling not only sketchbooks but also the walls of his home. After school, he admitted the Military Space Engineering Institute in St. Petersburg, but after a short time left his military career to pursue art.
Andrey has participated in over 100 exhibitions worldwide, including solo shows, and has won more than 40 international awards in the field of ironic graphics. In 2022, he repatriated to Israel. In 2023 and 2024, representing Israel in competitions in Croatia and Romania, he won bronze twice, placing among the top three cartoonists from 70 countries.
Andrey Popov’s work can be seen in numerous print and online publications. He has illustrated dozens of books, magazines, and newspapers.
Currently, Andrey lives and works in Haifa, and his works are found in private collections around the world.
